Contending for the Faith
One of the most exciting accounts in Scripture is the story of the young man David and the Philistine warrior Goliath. The man was a weapon of psychological warfare: 9’9”(more than 2' taller than the tallest players in the history of the NBA). And he was outfitted like a human tank with 150 pounds of armor. The man must have looked invincible!
Every day Goliath would march out and hurl insults at the Israelites, defying them. And for 40 days no one would fight him. But then an obscure shepherd boy named David arrived with food from home for his brothers who were soldiers. When David heard the giant’s threats, he said, “Who is this Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?!”
Then, against everyone’s advice, David took his staff and his sling and ran to the battle and defeated Goliath. Something awakened in David that day. For him, the name of the Lord was worth fighting for – even if he should lose!
The book of Jude calls us to an awakening like David had – to step up and take a stand against those who have crept into the church to defy the name of the Lord and the Gospel of Christ. The book of Jude calls us to the battle and compels us to fight.
Look at Jude 3-4.
