Ruth & Boaz: A Second Chance at Love

May 18, 2025    Pastor Dan Spencer

The book of Ruth is one of the most beautiful stories ever told. It is a bright spot in a dark period in the history of Israel. It begins in a time of terrible famine during the period of the judges. In order to escape the famine and find food, a man from Bethlehem named Elimelech took his wife, Naomi, and his two sons to the country of Moab. While they were there, Elimelech died. Naomi was left to fend for herself as a widow and a refugee. Tragically, her sons died, too, but not before they had married Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth.

These three women, widows all, learned the lesson that everyone eventually learns: life can change in an instant. Tragedy strikes, health fails, relationships end, and it can leave us devastated. In Naomi’s culture, being a widow with no children meant she was on her own. She had no one to care for her in the future, and she was too old to start over. She had these two daughters-in-law, but they didn’t have anything either.

So, Naomi decides the best thing to do is to send Orpah and Ruth back to their families and go back home to Bethlehem. Orpah leaves, there is a lot of crying, but in a surprising twist, Ruth decides to go to Bethlehem with Naomi.

Please find the book of Ruth and let's see how the Lord changes their situations in the midst of an amazing love story.
