A Rich Man

In this session, we are going to read about a meeting with Jesus that is also recorded in Matthew and Luke. If you put together all three accounts of this meeting, you learn three things about this man: Matthew says he is a young man. Matthew and Mark both say he has a lot of possessions. And Luke adds the detail that he is a ruler, a religious ruler. He is a rich, young ruler – so that’s what we call him.

Mark says he comes running up to Jesus and kneels down before Him. He doesn’t just accidentally run into Jesus on the street. He is looking for Him. That shows that he is sincere and considers this urgent. He really wants Jesus to help him, to tell him what to do about his problem.

His problem is that there is something missing in his life. He adds it all up: “I’m rich, I’m young, and I’m a ruler – but people die young, and when they die, they don’t take their money or their titles with them. I want something that will last, something I can take with me to the other side of the grave. I want hope for life after death.”
